Solar Power Blog

I read an article from the New York Times titled Around the World on Solar Power Alone.  It talks about how a boat, called the Turanor PlanetSolar, went completely around the world on nothing but solar energy.  I believe that this a huge breakthrough but one that isn't going to make that much of a difference.  Sure it is good that solar energy is capable of powering a boat, but this boat wasn't like the bigger ships that roam the ocean spewing sulfer and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.  Like the article says: To make a big enough impact, thousands of ships would have to take on complete solar energy usage but these ships are too large to be powered by solar energy alone.  It just isn't within reach yet for things this size to make the transformation to solar energy.  However, they can use solar energy to run some of the appliances on board.  That wouldn't make a huge difference but every little bit helps.
